Curriculum
The graduation standards known as the Michigan Merit Curriculum requires 16 credits for graduation, which could be acquired through subject and integrated (mixed subject) classes, as well as, career and technical education programs. Credits obtained prior to high school can also count. Required credits include:
  • 4 Mathematics credits including Algebra I; Geometry, Algebra II; including one credit in the senior year
  • 4 English Language Arts credits aligned with subject area content expectations developed by MDE;
  • 3 Science credits including Biology; Physics or Chemistry; one additional science credit
  • 3 Social Studies credits: US History and Geography, World History and Geography, .5 credit Civics, .5 credit Economics
  • 1 Physical Education/Health credit guidelines developed by MDE;
  • 1 Visual, Performing, Applied Arts credit guidelines developed by MDE;
  • 1  On-line course or learning experience, which occurs at Western in 12th grade English.

NOTE: Beginning with the Class of 2016 students will need to complete 2 credits of a world language in grades 9-12.

To obtain a diploma from Western High School or Western Options High School, students must complete 26 credits.  This means 10 elective credits in addtion to the MMC required credits stated above.

Common Core State Standards
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Western School District will be hard at work transitioning its English Language Arts and Math curriculums to align with the new federal Common Core State Standards.

Teachers will begin implementing this new curriculum in classrooms in the fall of 2012.

The first planned State assessment of student proficiency on these new standards will be in the 2014-2015 school year.
